cover setup

If you design your book cover, it must be “ready to print” in a trouble-free PDF, which means that your cover file is printed as is. You can save money if you go this route, but designing your book to industry standards takes a lot of time and effort, as well as software knowledge and technical book design details. All covers are printed digitally in full color.

Cover Setup Steps

book printingDesign your cover in the software of your choice. We recommend Adobe InDesign for cover layout, but customers also use MSWord, Publisher, Illustrator and Quark. The book cover must be set up as one piece, with back, front and spine on a single document page, with crop marks provided. Click the links below for layout instructions and measurements.

file prep Design Tip: The spine color should be continuous from the front or back. Do not design the spine with a stripe of color, it makes the spine of the book hard to align during binding.

upload filesSend your cover PDF to us, or burn a CD and mail it. A signed quote and a deposit of half down will get us started! We send printed proofs within 3 business days. We do not make corrections to PDF files. If you see something on your proof you would like to change, you must provide us a revised PDF file. Processing and emailing a new cover proof after the first proof will cost $10.00. Additional printed and mailed cover proofs, after the first one, are $25.00 each.

Photos and Images

We recommend that your images be 300 dpi, no more or no less. Images that are less than 300 will print poorly, especially photos taken from the web, which are typically 72 dpi.
