Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

In November 2005 Gorham Printing had the opportunity to work with the staff of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition in printing a hard-cover book for the middle daughter of the Kirkwood family who lived in western Washington. Disney artists were brought in to create ten illustrations based on her story and our Art Director, Kathy Campbell, did the cover and page layout for the book.

If you are familiar with the show’s storyline, the selected family is treated to a week’s vacation while the design team comes in and completely builds or redesigns their home. Participating companies are given a short window of time to create and deliver their products. For Gorham’s part, we had to cram eight weeks of production into only five days.

Disney staff didn’t finish their illustrations until late Friday afternoon and finished books had to be delivered by Monday night. With wonderful help from the staff of Oregon Book Binding, printed and laminated hard cover books were delivered by the office staff of Gorham Printing the night before the family was to return.

Driving into the flood-lit secured area, the Gorham staff was greeted by the field producer. Later, after watching the organized chaos in the volunteer and VIP tents, they had a chance to meet Ty Pennington. Quite an experience for all.

The show aired on January 15, 2006 and Gorham staff enjoyed seeing the reactions of the family when they found the printed copy of Jael Kirkwood’s story.

New location

In 1976, Kurt and Norma Gorham opened a commercial print shop in downtown Centralia, Washington. They entered a world of fast-paced deadlines, building a reputation for integrity and professionalism with larger corporate clients. After 15 years in commercial printing, they decided to change their focus to book printing.

Over the years they have kept pace with the evolution of printing technology. Major advancements in the methods of a mostly mechanical pre-press area have now changed to a completely computerized book design department. New technology has aided in the pressroom and bindery area as well. Digital printing, once just a dream, is now a reality facilitating a method for short-run books at a reasonable cost. Much has changed in 30 years, but Gorham Printing continues to thrive and grow into the future.

Gorham Printing opened their new location in November of 2006. The new building is being constructed at the Port of Centralia, on the corner of Mahoney and Steelhammer streets. The new location, close to Centralia and Interstate 5, will allow easier access. The future looks bright for streamlined workflows and increased production!
