Hardcover Specs

We offer two types of hardcover, Printed & Laminated Hardcover (see explanation below) or Clothbound hardcover (see below). Printed Laminated Hardcover

A printed and laminated hardcover consists of a cover printed in full color on 100# coated stock, then laminated and glued onto binder board. If you design it, you will need to provide a trouble-free PDF that meets our specifications. A printed and laminated hardcover must be set up as one piece, with back, front and spine on a single document page, as well as proper crop marks provided.

    Your Printed Laminated cover files will not incur any extra charges, when:

  • The front cover, spine, and back cover are one piece, in a single PDF file (see our Cover Layout guides).
  • The front and back cover elements are centered along the width.
  • The cover is measured to the book trim size, with the correct spine width, and 1/8" bleed on all 4 sides.
  • The barcode is a vector image on a white background (when applicable).
  • The spine text is centered within the spine width.
  • There is 1/16 inch space on either side of spine type.

Clothbound Hardcover

A clothbound hardcover binding is covered with linen fabric or imitation leather over binder board. Fabric or imitation leather covers are foil stamped (in gold or silver) on the front and spine with the title, subtitle and author name. For quantities under 400, this is done with Ludlow type and the choices of typefaces, weights and sizes are limited. For quantities over 400, or if a specific typeface is needed, we can create a die for foil stamping. Die prices add $100.00 to $200.00 (or more) additional, depending on how many square inches are stamped. Foil stamping on cloth has limitations. Basic Ludlow setup by Gorham Printing is included in your quote, no need to prepare a PDF file for this type of binding.

Standard Fabric Colors (ArrestoxB)

We offer 10 colors to choose from (see below). Colors below are approximate, and cannot be accurately portrayed onscreen. The vellum fabrics are solid, while the linens have a subtle linen texture. For print quantities over 500 books, more colors are available.

Imitation Leather

We offer 6 colors to choose from (see below). Imitation leather costs 30 cents more per book than the Arrestox B Fabric shown above. Colors below are approximate, and cannot be accurately portrayed onscreen. Imitation leather has a marbled texture, and the Spanish Leathers have a black marbled texture.
