How to Make a PDF from InDesign (for Offset Printing)
To make a quality PDF file, you must have or purchase Adobe Acrobat, which includes Acrobat Distiller. If your files will be printed offset (on our printing press) we put the files through special software to get the plates made. Do not use InDesign's "Export to PDF" feature to create your PDF (it will create composite fonts that our software will reject).
Before you make your PDF:
 |
TEXT FILES:
Page Size: The page size must be the final trim size of the book. For example: if your finished book is 6x9, the paper size must be setup as 6x9.
Photos and Images: We recommend that photos be 300 dpi. See Scanning Details for further details.
Single File: The whole book must be one single file. If your chapters and intro pages are all separate files you must combine them together, either in InDesign or in Acrobat after you make PDFs of every file.
Page Count: The final page count of the whole book must be in multiples of 16 for offset printing, and multiples of two for digital printing. Call us if you have questions as to which printing method your book will use.
Bleeds: If you have bleeds in your document, you must contact us to discuss their size and placement.
Image Color: All black-and-white images must be grayscale. All full color images must be CMYK.
COVER FILES:
Cover setup: Covers have specific requirements, including crop marks, spine marks, page size and bleed. See Soft Cover Layout or Hard Cover Setup for details.
Image Color: All black-and-white images must be grayscale. All full color images must be CMYK.

Step 1: Check InDesign file.
  |
1. Open your file in Adobe InDesign.
2. Go to Type>Find Font. If any fonts have a yellow triangle, click on that font in the list and click "Find First". This will take you to the font and highlight it. Then you can choose how you want to change it.
3. Open the Links palette. Check that all links are up-to-date.
4. Go to File>Preflight. This will list any other errors with the file, such as color images that are RGB rather than CMYK, etc.
|
Step 2: Make a postscript file.
  |
1. Go to File>Print. Use the settings below in the tabs of the Print dialog box:
General tab: At the top, the Printer should be "Postscript File" and the PPD should be "Adobe PDF". Make sure all pages are selected, and blank pages is selected.
Setup tab: Paper size should be custom, and the width and height should match your trim size.
Marks & Bleeds tab: Do not set marks here. Our Imposition software will add appropriate marks for text files. Please do not add any marks in this section.
Output tab: Color should be "composite CMYK". (If your document contains spot colors, please contact us).
Graphics tab: Image, Send data: "all", Fonts, download: "Complete". Postscript: "Level 2", Data format: ASCII.
Color management tab: No options required unless you have color management policies applied.
Transparency tab: If you have transparencies set in your file (including drop shadows), select "High Resolution" in the Transparency Flattener Preset
|
(Now that you have all your settings, it is recommended to save these as a "Gorham Printing Postscript Present".)
At the bottom of the screen, click Save to save your postscript file..
|
Step 3: Download our joboptions file.
  |
PC users: Right click the rectangle below. In the drop box that appears, select "Save Link As".
MAC users: Control + click on the rectangle below to access our joboptions.

Save the file on your computer in a place where you can retrieve it later. Make sure that the file retains its complete name: "gorhamprinting.joboptions".
|
Step 4: Load the above joboptions file into Acrobat Distiller.
  |
1. Open Acrobat Distiller. Click on Settings>Add Adobe PDF Settings.
2. In the "Add Adobe PDF Settings" dialog, locate the "gorhamprinting.joboptions" file, and click Open.
3. In the Acrobat Distiller dialog, make sure that "gorhamprinting.joboptions" is your default joboption file.
|
Step 5: Distill the postscript file.
  |
1. In Acrobat Distiller, click File>Open to locate your postscript file and distill it.
2. That's it, your PDF is made. We recommend checking it carefully before sending it our way. Check to make sure you have all pages included in your text file, and double-check our layout specs at this point as well.
|
Step 6: Give us the PDF.
You can use one of three methods to give us your PDF:
  |
Upload from our FTP page. (up to 75 MB)
Email the file to us as an attachment. (7 MB maximum)
Put the file on CD and mail.
