Do you have the "eye" to tell good text design from bad text design? Do you know what text design elements to look for when comparing your book to others in the marketplace? Reviewers and mainstream publishers do! Professional text design will impact sales and give you credibility with potential readers and industry professionals, while a "homemade" text design can appear amateurish. Check out the three text design levels we offer:

- Body Text
- Copyright Page and Dedication
- Table of Contents
- Title page
- Basic page numbering

Level 2 includes the above plus:
- Emailed preview of the design before proof is printed
- Preface, Foreword, Introduction, Acknowledgements, Endnotes
- Sources, Bibliography, Appendices, Chapter Notes
- Bulleted or numbered Lists
- Running header
- Order Form
- See Level 2
Level 3 includes the above plus:
- Emailed preview of the design before proof is printed
- Index design (from tagged file)
- Images that bleed off edge
- Running headers or footers
- Multiple columns
- Pull quotes
- Footnotes
- Sidebars
- See Level 3
Investing in good quality text design will make your book more readable and professional, resulting in more notice from booksellers, readers and publishers. Text layout is a subtle design process involving more than justifying margins and picking a typeface. With our design experience and knowledge of book design software we can handle the many technical details, and make your book look great in the process!
How do we design your text?
To design your text pages, we will need a text file of the book to import into Adobe InDesign CS5.5. Some programs we can accept: Microsoft Word (any version), Wordperfect or Microsoft Publisher. It is best to have the whole book saved as a single file, with no graphics or photos included.
What do we do with photos and images?
We use Adobe Photoshop CS5.5 to prepare your photos and images for printing. We optimize photos by giving them a good balance of dark areas and light areas, so the photos look similar to each other, and so they print properly. We charge the following per image:
- Original paper photo: scan, optimize and place with caption: $10 each
- Digital photo file: optimize and place with caption: $5 each
- Logos and line art (including scanning, optimizing and placing): $10 each
- Tables, charts, maps and graphs: $80 per hour
Pricing Caveats
Prices are based on hourly estimate, if time exceeds that allowed, more charges could result. Design is "work for hire"; the design is the property of the customer. Design Level per page price does not include images, those are priced for each image.
